Valheim 1.0 Release Date & What to Expect
Posted by Dals | 31 August 2026
Valheim is officially releasing their 1.0 update and leaving Early Access on September 9th of 2026. The update is a long-time coming, and focusing especially on the new Deep North content in the game. But we'll cover all of the biggest changes coming below, and what you can expect when the update drops.
The Deep North
By far, the most anticipated part of the Valheim 1.0 update is the new Deep North region/biome.
This will be a frozen region always located in the northern areas of the world, though still procedurally generated, and feature entirely new structures, enemies, resources, bosses, and more.

Deep North Enemies & Equipment
Some of the enemies revealed to us already in the trailer for the update include a massive ancient troll, twisted goat-like creatures in dungeons, and other unnamed bosses.
We've also seen teasers for new characters, Deep North-themed equipment, and arguably most notably, the introduction of a grappling hook as a new way to traverse the world!

New Deep North Mechanics
Apart from the new equipment teased, the Deep North also comes with its own gameplay mechanics and challenges. Thanks to the region being covered in snow, you'll need to keep the terrain itself in mind as you explore the area.
Ice on the ground can be slippery as you walk over it, and especially snowy areas can prevent building unless you level the area enough by clearing away the snow (this will be doable with a shovel now, specially made for clearing snow!)
Deep North Crafting & Food
The Deep North also comes with its own crafting materials, food sources, and consumables for you to discover! Food isn't abundant in the snow-torn biome, but you'll still be able to find a new form of berries, and craft new frosty structures and production areas, such as the coming Frost Foundry structure.
As a whole, Valheim 1.0 promises a big expanses to the building systems in the game, featuring all-new structures and building pieces, both themed around the Deep North and otherwise.

Game Optimization & Improvements
Apart from the addition of the Deep North, Valheim as a whole is going to be seeing some major improvements across the board. This includes the addition of over 50 new achievements to unlock, many of which will be tied to the new Deep North region, and the soon to be complete journey through the world of Valheim itself.
There are also promised changes to the game to help improve world loading & saving times, performance/lag in general, and many other quality of life improvements to make the game feel more intuitive.
Post-1.0 Content
The developers of Valheim have promised that they will continue to support Valheim even after its release, but they're unsure what the extent of that support will look like.
Bugfixes, quality of life improvements, and other smaller patches are going to be a focus of the team, but whether more content updates like this one will be released in the future is uncertain. Valheim is in a great state, and if the team is confident enough to release the game into its final form in their eyes, the decision only bodes well for what future projects might be in store for us from the team at Iron Gate Studios.
Get Ready for the Deep North
Although the developers have recommended that players start a new save for the best experience with the 1.0 update, the new area will still be accessible to existing worlds and playthroughs!
Even if you end up starting fresh to get the true experience, Valheim is a very story and lore-rich game, and benefits a lot from exploration, replays, and just generally familiarizing yourself with the world. If you'd like to jump into the Deep North right as it drops, it's worth exploring the game in advance to learn about the world around you, whether you plan on resetting or continuing with your existing progress!
