Creating And Using Instances

What are instances?

An Instance is similar to a backup, except they are more like a "snap shot" of your server and it's contents.
While a backup will only save your current files onto it's own storage, an instance will remember what contents you have on your server in real time.

Why use instances?

Sometimes you might want to switch your server between games or modpacks without having to re-upload your data between transitions. An instance will enable you to easily switch your server between games and their saved progress without having to go through the process of re-uploading files manually, or adjusting the entire server each time.
In other words, instances are almost like a server "Personalities" that you can switch between.

What can you use instances for?

Instances can be used for several purposes, whether it be for testing purposes, or general server functionality.

  • Creating temporary instances to test if certain modifications will work, without having to worry about ruining your server

  • Switch between two instances that contain different games or modpacks

  • Use an instance as a alternative to a backup

How to Create An Instance

In order to create an instance, follow this step-by-step guide.

  1. Login to your Kinetic Panel

  2. Stop your server by clicking the power button, then click the square icon.

  3. On the left side of the panel, open your "Instances" tab.

  4. In the instances menu, you'll be able to view all of your existing instances, and you'll be able to create a new one by clicking the "New Instance" button on the top right.

  5. After you click "New Instance", you'll be met with a menu that enables you to set a name for your new instance. Once you've set the name, you can click "Create Instance". For the purpose of this guide, we will be keeping the instance's name the original.

  6. After the instance upload is complete, you'll notice that the instances menu has changed. Your server will automatically be placed on the new created instance, and your old instance (The one you had before creating a new one) will be stored.

    notice
You'll notice that the new instance will contain the same contents as your default instance. This is normal, as it's a copy of your default Instance. You'll be able to edit the new instance, while the default instance content will remain the same as it was.
  7. Now, you'll be able to do anything you like with the new instances. For the purpose of the guide, I have installed Minecraft Bedrock on my new instance, while my default instance will have Minecraft Java edition installed.

As you can see, I have Minecraft Java Edition installed on my default instance. While on my other instance, I have Minecraft Bedrock installed. I'll be able to edit the files on each instance and switch between them without having my changes reverted.

How To Rename An Instance

Renaming an instance is quite simple. When you click the edit icon next to your instance in the instances menu, you can change the name there.
