What's going on with Hytale?
Posted by Cole | 2 December 2025
Hytale, originally teased in 2018, is a sandbox adventure game that was being created by the team behind Hypixel, the largest Minecraft Server. In 2020 the Hytale project was bought by Riot Games, the creator of huge games like Valorant and League of Legends and then was eventually cancelled earlier this year.
We will go through the full story behind Hytale, what happened, what’s happening now and what’s to come for the future of the game (Hint: Early Access will be happening on January 13th 2026!)

Hytale’s History
As mentioned above, Hytale was originally teased in 2018, at this point the game had already been in development for quite some time. The Game Engine was being written in C# and Java, being written for the PC. Development continued steadily until 2020 when Riot Games, the creator of many large game titles, acquired the Hytale project; they brought on over 100 developers to work on the game.
After developing further, they decided to rewrite the engine, choosing to write it in C++ as this would work with PC and Consoles (XBOX, PS5, Nintendo Switch, etc)
After this point, not much is known regarding the Hytale development as the team at Riot didn’t share much progress.
This led up to June 2025 when Riot officially cancelled the Hytale Project, this should have been the end of the Hytale project, but Simon, the co-founder of Hypixel, had a different plan.
Hytale’s Present
Hytale was re-acquired by Simon Collins-Laflamme and Phillipe Touchette meaning the Hytale Project and Dream is still alive!
They have made the decision to scrap the new C++ Engine that was being developed as it would take, at a minimum, 2 years for the engine to be finished, reverting back to the “Legacy” C#/Java engine; this engine is mostly finished, only needing a few features before it is ready for an open beta.
Simon has promised to continue his vision for Hytale that he originally shared in 2018, promising Minigames, Full Modding Support and an expansive world ready for player exploration.
The Hytale team has said that an open beta is set to be available soon, other information about the game is slowly being released.
They have said that the game will cost $19.99, making it just as affordable as Minecraft.
Hytale’s Future
The future for Hytale is looking very bright but equally as arduous, there is a lot of work for the Hytale team to develop the product into the vision that Simon had nearly 8 years ago.
The Open Beta should release with both Singleplayer and Multiplayer support, as well as a custom modding system, making modding easy for even the least technically able user.
Minigames are a main feature that the team wants to develop, having built in Minigames that don’t need a mod to work, there is a dedicated team working on this but it will not be available during the open beta.
What’s Next?
The future for Hytale is looking extremely bright, the hype for the game is still very much there and everyone is excited for its release.
The pricing being so cheap will make it accessible to everyone, meaning the potential will be very high. The Early Access will be starting on January 13th 2026.
