Common Causes Of Lag On A Minecraft Server

Sorry, we don't yet have a video for this article, but we're working on it.

Hoppers

Hoppers are a very helpful tool in Minecraft, but they can be a cause of lag on the servers. The most common cause of lag with hoppers is when they taking in items. You can also add a composter on top of the hopper to help reduce some lag, this will prevent Minecraft from running a tick if an item is over the hopper.

Fixes For HopperLag

A simple fix is to not place as many hoppers in your world. You can help reduce this by using water or droppers to move items around, rather than hoppers, or when it comes to using a row of hoppers, use a hopper minecart instead.

Number of Entities

An entity is a mob or an item on the ground. A big build up of entities can cause lag on your server.

Fixes For Entity lag

Spread farms out so they're not all in one location, make sure you have a quick way of killing mobs in mob griders, and never let lots of items build up on the ground. Use lava or cactus to destroy items, or use a hopper minecart to collect them.

Using plugins like Clear Lagg in modern versions of Minecraft is not needed, and can cause more lag on your server.

World Generation

When you first generate a world, it can cause lag on your server. This is because the server is generating the world, and it's a very intensive process.

Fixes For World Generation Lag

Make use a world generation plugin or mod. Mods like Chunky can be run to load the world before you get on to play. This means the laggying process of generating those chunks is done before you get on to play.

Building At Spawn

The chunks you first spawn on are the spawn chunks of your world. These chunks are always loaded, and are the most important chunks on your server. If you build a big farm or a big redstone contraption in these chunks, it can cause lag on your server as it will always be running.

Fixes For Spawn Chunks Lag

Don't build big farms or redstone contraptions in the spawn chunks. If you do, make sure you turn them off when you're not using them.

Of cause we can also see the advantage of using these chunks to build in

Running Modded or Plugins?

If you're running mods or plugins it likely that one of these are the cause of lag on your server. To find the plugin or mod causing the issue, we'll need to install a mod called spark and read the profile.
